Facial expressions such as smiling, frowning, squinting, and raising the eyebrows repeatedly contract the same muscles over time. At first, the lines caused by these movements may disappear when the face relaxes, but gradually they can become more noticeable even at rest.
Botox works by temporarily relaxing selected facial muscles, reducing the repeated movement that contributes to expression lines such as forehead creases, frown lines, and crow’s feet.
Preventive Botox refers to using small, carefully planned doses before expression lines become deeply established. The idea is to reduce excessive muscle activity so that repeated folding of the skin happens less often.
This approach does not mean everyone should start Botox at a certain age. Treatment is usually considered based on facial movement, genetics, skin condition, and whether early lines are beginning to remain visible at rest.
Botox can soften dynamic wrinkles and may help slow the development of deeper expression lines by temporarily reducing muscle contraction. With repeated treatments, some people may also develop less strong movement in the treated muscles.
However, evidence that preventive Botox completely stops future wrinkles is limited. Wrinkles are also influenced by sun exposure, genetics, collagen loss, smoking, and natural ageing, so Botox cannot prevent every type of facial ageing.
There is no universal “best age” for preventive Botox. Some people develop visible expression lines earlier because of strong facial muscles or genetics, while others may not need treatment until much later.
A conservative approach is important. Treating only when there is a clear need can help preserve natural expressions while avoiding unnecessary or excessive injections.
Botox may help delay the deepening of certain expression lines by reducing repeated muscle movement, but it should not be viewed as a guarantee against ageing or wrinkles. Natural-looking results depend on personalised treatment, appropriate dosing, and realistic expectations. Sun protection, skincare, and healthy lifestyle habits remain equally important for maintaining skin quality over time.
